Arkadiy Kurta is a contemporary photographer based in Kiev, Ukraine, focusing on art nu photography. He works with a Nikon D700 and uses Nikon 80-200 2.8, Nikon 50 mm, Nikon 85mm, Nikon 14-24mm, and Nikon 105mm lenses.
Arkadiy grew up in the small city of Sumy in Ukraine and lived in Germany for two years while he attended school. Prior to working in art, he attended the Banking Academy of Finance. He became interested in photography at the age of twenty-eight when presented with an inexpensive camera. The following year, at twenty-nine years old, he enrolled in the Kiev School of Photography. By the age of thirty-one, he had opened his first photo studio in his hometown.
It was not until he was thirty-four that he began working with nude models. Prior to that he worked as a commercial photographer and shot fashion, portraits, landscapes, and weddings. He discovered, however, that photographing the nude female body allowed him to come out of his introverted shell and confidently present the viewer with the beauty of the naked form.Through his art he was able to demonstrate that there is nothing more perfect than the human body.
The genre of artnudes allows Arkadiy Kurta to confidently explore his love and fascination with the beauty found in nudity. The images he produces use shadow and light to highlight the nude form posed in street scenes. He rarely uses the camera's flash while shooting out on the street as he prefers to work with natural light. Though occasionally he does use a reflector and a diffuser to achieve the desired atmosphere of his cityscape nudes. His images focus on producing artistic and emotive portraits. He believes that a photographer and his model share a connection. Often, the success of an image and portrayal of an image lies in the intimacy of that connection.
When he first started working with nudes, Czech photographer and painter Jan Saudek was his primary influence. Furthermore, Saudek’s work shaped Kurta’s own perception of art nu photography. Today, his nudes are inspired by his mood and experiences, allowing his creativity to flow freely. The idea for an image might come to him while he listens to music, watches a movie, or while he looks at other photography.
There is not one typical day in Kurta’s studio. He constantly travels on photo tours, making each photo shoot unique and breaking the monotony of being in the studio all the time. His most memorable photography project was the series he shot in the Carpathian Mountains, located in central and eastern Europe. Photo tours give Kurta the ability to shoot in the early morning and achieve city nudes with ease and limited distractions. One day he hopes to photograph his art nu in the island of Cuba, fulfilling his desire to capture the culture and colors of the streets of Cuba, a juxtaposition of his current portfolio focused on European streets.
Arkadiy Kurta’s photographs have exhibited in various solo and group exhibitions throughout Ukraine. He held his first solo exhibition at the age of thirty-six. In addition, his art nu images have received awards in various photography contests such as the PhotoShoot Awards in 2019, the 3rd International Salon Shadow in 2016, and the Il Xativa’s International Photography Contest. Furthermore, he has received gold and silver medals for his photographs at accredited competitions by the Photographic Society of America (PSA) and International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP).
To this day Arkadiy Kurta continues to travel and pursue his passion in hopes of making his mark in photography and developing his own genre of nude art.
